Intersection of Grant & 6th Street

April 24, 2019

Bondurant-Farrar Patrons,

The intersection of Grant Street and 6th Street SW continues to be a traffic challenge, particularly at the end of the school day. This is the intersection directly east of the Morris/Anderson Elementary shared parking lot. As traffic is departing from the campus all at once, this intersection, in particular, backs up and is hazardous. It has become common to see through traffic attempting to pass turning traffic on shoulders and down the middle of the road, causing unsafe conditions.

After consulting with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Bondurant City Officials, we have determined that the best course of action is to eliminate all left-turning traffic at this intersection, during dismissal only . This means that northbound traffic on Grant will not be able to turn onto 6th Street, nor will eastbound traffic on 6th Street be able to turn left onto Grant. If this is your usual path, you will need to find an alternative path.  This will be effective on Monday, April 29th and is after school only. Signs will be posted and Polk County will have additional law enforcement to assist with this the first several days as new routines are established. To help illustrate this change, an aerial map of this intersection has been included for reference.

As a reminder, the District will start to utilize an additional unloading/loading area starting in August of 2019. This will be the next block to the south, at the new Morris entrance/parking lot.  We are hopeful that this will help to disperse the traffic off of Grant Street and further alleviate some of the challenges we currently have. We will update our school community as we put all of these plans into place for the 2019-20 school year.
