Bondurant-Farrar was recently recognized as a 2022 Casey’s Cash for Classrooms grant recipient. The district’s high school art department will receive $11,000 to benefit two separate mediums - ceramics and screen printing.
In order to continue to grow the program and expand offerings, the BFHS art department collaborates with local artists for professional development opportunities and often invites these experts into the classroom to co-teach specialized techniques to students. Within these course offerings, especially ceramics and sculpture, it is essential that students have access to certain materials in order to practice techniques and learn through hands-on experiences. Through Casey’s Cash for Classrooms grant, the department will be able to purchase underglazes, glazes, and a variety of clay types allowing students to further explore the creation process and master advanced techniques.
Funds from the Casey’s grant will also be used on a separate project that could one day lead to a new course offering that will allow students to create on a new medium that has previously been unavailable to them in such a way. Screen printing would be a new offering whereby students become familiar with screen printing, not only on t-shirts, but likely even posters, bumper stickers, portfolios, and more, ranging from single to multi-color. To offer these unique learning experiences, the course requires a wide range of bulk materials to be purchased in advance, with equipment allowing the program to do several types of printing processes. Aside from screen printing, they will also be able to do woodblock and intalio. Because of the financial support provided through this grant, printing projects will allow students to create unique items in support of local events or causes, allowing students to take a greater role in the community through their creations.
